Due to ongoing litigation and a recent settlement between the Town of Smithtown and LIPA, LIPA is shifting from making traditional tax payments to Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT). This shift impacts the school district’s tax levy and increases the tax rate for local taxpayers. After discussing this with the town earlier this week, I feel it is important to inform the community of this change and its impact on our taxpayers.
