Suffolk County 250th Student Passbook
March 30, 2026
Dear Kings Park Students and Families,
Happy almost April! This year marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The technical term for this event is the semi-quincentennial anniversary. There are 56 signatures on the Declaration of Independence, including one from Long Island (Brookhaven) – William Floyd. Over the past several months, I have had the pleasure of serving on the Suffolk County 250th Commemorative Planning Committee. One of the goals of the committee is to encourage Suffolk County’s youth to explore various sites – landmarks, museums and other historical sites that tell the story of our nation’s fight for independence and Long Island’s role in it. To accomplish this goal, the committee authored and published the Long Island 250th Passbook. Suffolk County has developed a dedicated website to celebrate this historical event. The passbook can be accessed in a variety of ways and formats.

To find out when each location or organization will be giving out commemorative stamps during the year 2026, please check their website for special events, dates, and times. As you visit each location, present your book to be stamped as proof of your journey through history.
In an effort to incentivize student exploration, the school district has established a partnership with the Town of Smithtown. Any Kings Park CSD student that completes a journey through ALL six (6) sites in the Town of Smithtown will be presented with a special proclamation. To be eligible, completed passbooks must be submitted to the student’s principal on or before Friday, September 25, 2026. Proclamations will be presented at a designated meeting in the fall.
Go explore the Town of Smithtown in 2026!
Sincerely,
Timothy T. Eagen, Ed.D.
