The mission of the Kings Park Heritage Museum is to accumulate and display the town’s past through photographs, written word, and artifacts. The Kings Park Heritage Museum makes these items available for educational purposes and stresses the diversity of the town’s heritage. Part of the mission is to bring together the townspeople, students, and the school district as a cooperating partnership to maintain the Museum facility.

Museum Exhibits

Lule Medical Room

lule10

This room is dedicated to the doctors, dentists, pharmacists, and hospital nurses who were so much a part of this community. Named to honor the town’s first and only visiting nurse, Mary Lule, it is housed, appropriately, in the former School Nurse’s room. This area highlights those human beings who made the area a leading center for people care. Dr. Bonadino’s office equipment provides atmosphere for the exhibit.

Cusick History Room

cusick15

When there is a town history question to be answered, all roads lead to John Cusick’s home. For that and for the numerous memorabilia donated by John and Alice, this room bears his family name. Half the room portrays Kings Park’s involvement in national conflicts. The other half depicts a turn of the century classroom. The center of the room is set up for small lectures and video presentations. Unsung heroes and heroines dominate the space.

Smith Room

Marion Smith Lederman is a direct descendant of Obadiah Smith, whose house still stands on St. Johnland Road. Within a month of the Museum’s opening, Marion began donating treasures from the Smith household history. Pictures, family trees, books, tools, and one-of-a-kind memorabilia adorn this room because of her generosity. Marion also gave us verbal memories. Her story of Katy, the one-time slave, is a town classic. Her heritage roots are deep and we thank her for sharing them with us.

Miles Borden Room

borden11

The Miles Borden room is dedicated to and named for Miles Borden, who has written a history of the Kings Park hamlet, as well as a history of the Kings Park Fire Department. He is a wonderful resource as both an historian and a humanist. The room is set up to replicate an old fashioned one-room schoolhouse. It contains twelve pre-1950 student desks as well as a 150-year-old map of the Kings Park area and a 100-year-old transportation map. Slate boards complete the setting.

Colgan Room

colgan4

Peter Colgan accumulated great many American artifacts because of his occupation as a landscape designer. His clients were on the North Shore of Long Island. Peter embraced the concept and development of a town museum. When the time came to move, Peter donated several hundred items, large and small, to this fledgling museum. What he did not donate, he sold at bargain rates, with no restriction on payments. When the Model A automobile joins a parade, or when the player piano surprises a group, or when the spinning wheel is used in a demonstration, think of Peter Colgan and the fact that he had faith in this establishment.

Tiernan Room

tier21

The Tiernan Room is dedicated to and named for George Tiernan, a local dentist, who is one of the founders of the Kings Park Heritage Museum. George has been collecting thousands of old photos of the hamlet of Kings Park, as well as of Kings Park State Hospital. He is a wonderful resource for identifying old-timers, as well as for his vast knowledge of Kings Park history. The Tiernan Room is an archival room. It houses such precious items as World War II diaries, nearly 5,000 pictures, town records, and information on town families.
